Product Summary

Scaler 3 is a music theory and composition plugin by Scaler Music — and it’s one of those tools that genuinely changes how you write music. Whether you’re a beginner who struggles to build chord progressions or an experienced producer looking to break out of your usual harmonic habits, Scaler 3 meets you exactly where you are.

At its core, Scaler 3 helps you build intelligent chord progressions. Drag and drop chords into a sequencer, and Scaler will suggest what comes next — all based on real music theory. It detects which parent scales fit your chosen chords and voice-leads between them automatically, so transitions sound smooth without you having to think too hard about it.

The plugin comes loaded with over 1,000 chord sets, organized by mood, genre, and artist. We’re talking everything from Chill and Jazz to Metal and Cinematic — plus artist curated sets from names like Carl Cox and MJ Cole. If you’re ever stuck, just ask Scaler to suggest the next chord. It’s like having a knowledgeable co-writer on standby.

One of the biggest upgrades in version 3 is the Arrange Page, which now features a full multi-lane timeline layout. You get dedicated lanes for chords, melody, bass, and phrases — all synchronized with your main chord track. Clips are independently adjustable per lane, which gives you genuine arrangement control without ever leaving the plugin.

Scaler 3 also introduces VST/AU Plugin Hosting, meaning you can load your favourite third-party instruments and effects directly onto Chord Tracks and MIDI Lanes. You’re no longer bouncing between windows — your sounds live right inside Scaler’s workflow.

For composers and producers who like to work away from a DAW, Scaler 3 now runs as a fully standalone application on both Mac and Windows. It supports multitrack operation and plugin hosting in standalone mode too, so it’s a genuinely capable composition environment on its own.

The Motions system (the evolution of Scaler’s Phrases, Performances, Melodies, and Basslines) has been completely reimagined in version 3. Hundreds of new Motions, crafted by professional musicians, are now browsable by mood-based tags. A new type called Passages is also included. Each Motion can be customised in the built-in note editor, with harmonic modifiers for transposition, note density, pitch range, and clip rotation.

Scaler 3 adds Scenes, which let you build, duplicate, and arrange different chord variations to structure full tracks intuitively — great for songwriting sessions and live performance setups alike.

The User Track Recording feature lets you capture your own melodies and performances directly into Scaler’s piano roll in real time. Chord, scale, and note guides keep everything harmonically grounded while you record, and full MIDI editing lets you refine afterward.

The Divisi and Bass Follow system gives you detailed control over how chord voices are split across instruments. Upper and lower notes can be routed to separate Scaler instances for realistic ensemble layering, and the Bass Follow Track automatically generates a bassline that tracks the root of your chord progression.

Harmonic exploration tools include the Circle of Fifths (for chord substitutions, inversions, and transpositions), the Explore Page (chords categorised by feel — Dark, Bright, Neutral — untied from any specific scale), the Colors Page (a unified view of all voicing alternatives and substitution options), and the Modulation Pathways tool (which suggests five methods for moving between scales: Progression, Secondary Scale, Modal Interchange, Mediants, and Neo-Riemannian).

The Sketch Pad lets you compare up to seven progressions side by side, while Live Sync keeps chords consistent across multiple Scaler instances in your DAW session. External MIDI Out is now available in both plugin and standalone versions for routing to any external instrument.

Scaler 3 ships with 50 internal sounds — pianos, synths, orchestral instruments — and includes the Scaler Detector as a separate plugin for detecting the key and scale of audio and MIDI input. An onboard tutorial overlay walks new users through the interface on first launch.
