XLN Audio’s RC-20 Retro Color costs $99 at full price. It’s the lo-fi plugin people search for by name, and the one most beatmakers recommend first. You don’t have to pay that much, though. Several free plugins cover parts of what it does, a handful of paid ones cost $24 to $69, and RC-20 itself goes on sale often enough that full price is rarely the price people pay.
⚡ The short answer
- Want it free? Chow Tape Model (tape wobble and wear), TAL-Bitcrusher (bit and sample-rate reduction) and Airwindows Iron Oxide Classic 2 (cheap tape tone) cover RC-20’s tape, wobble and digital sides. You lose the single window and the one-knob blend.
- Want one cheap plugin? Aberrant DSP’s SketchCassette II ($24 on sale) is the closest single alternative for tape character, including dropouts.
- Want RC-20 itself? Wait for a sale. Forum users report paying as little as £15 to $35 in past sales.
- Want simple controls? Baby Audio’s Super VHS ($69) has six effects, each on one knob.
🎛️ What RC-20 actually does
RC-20 has six effect modules: Noise (tape hiss, hum, static and other noise), Wobble (pitch wow and flutter), Distort, Digital (bit and sample-rate reduction), Space (reverb) and Magnetic (tape dropouts and wear). A Magnitude control turns all six up or down together, and Flux adds randomness so the effect moves over time.
XLN Audio’s own introduction to RC-20:
That combination is why it’s popular. On music forums, users single out the Magnetic module and Flux as the parts other plugins don’t match.
Users also list what they wish it did:
- You can’t change the order of the modules.
- You can’t load your own noise recordings.
- Some Distort settings can sound “fizzy” when pushed, because the plugin doesn’t oversample.
- It’s easy to add tones you don’t notice. Several users suggest turning one module up fully to hear what it adds, then backing it off.
- Installation and activation happen online, through XLN’s own installer. There’s no offline installer.
🤔 Do you need a lo-fi plugin at all?
Maybe not. On producer forums, experienced boom bap and lo-fi producers make the same point again and again: the sound comes from sample choice, rolling off the high end, slow-attack compression and arrangement more than from any plugin. Crackle on top of a bright, busy mix still sounds modern.

Chow Tape Model is a free, open-source tape emulation from Chowdhury DSP. It began as a university research project and models a reel-to-reel machine, with sections for saturation, wow and flutter, and a Degrade section for wear. It runs on Mac (Intel and Apple Silicon), Windows and Linux in VST, VST3, AU, AAX and CLAP formats. For years, forum users struggled to find a free plugin that did wow and flutter well. Chow Tape Model has its own wow and flutter section with tempo-sync options.

TAL-Bitcrusher handles the digital side: lower bit depth and sample rate, the grainy sound of old samplers. TAL Software rebuilt it in 2026 with a resizable window, a preset browser and a new Companding control. It’s free, runs natively on Apple Silicon and comes in VST, VST3, AU, AAX and CLAP.
Airwindows Iron Oxide Classic 2 is a simple tape effect with a narrow, band-limited tone. Its maker calls it a “bandpassy tape sim”. Forum users recommend it for a rougher tape sound than Airwindows’ cleaner tape plugins. All Airwindows plugins are free and open source, with signed Mac AU and VST downloads for Intel and Apple Silicon.

Unison Zen Master is the closest free plugin to RC-20’s one-window approach. Five macro knobs cover detune and width (Hypnosis), tape-style pitch wobble (Imbalance), bitcrushing (Electrify), vinyl, crackle or white noise (Noise) and reverb (Ascend). It’s free, but you give Unison your name and email to get the download. Bedroom Producers Blog called it a decent lo-fi multi-effect with simple controls; users tend to describe it as basic.
Unison’s introduction to Zen Master:
A free chain that gets close to RC-20: put TAL-Bitcrusher first for the digital grit, then Chow Tape Model for wobble and saturation, then a low-pass filter from your DAW to roll off the highs. Add noise last and keep it quiet.
💸 Cheaper paid alternatives
SketchCassette II by Aberrant DSP is a close single-plugin match for RC-20’s tape side, including the dropouts its Magnetic module is known for. It has 12 tape type and quality profiles, an age control, two saturation models, hiss, stereo dropouts, tempo-synced wow and flutter, and 61 presets. It’s on sale at $24 (normally $36). The demo is fully featured but drops the sound briefly every 45 seconds and can’t save presets. Forum users praise its range, from clean tape to badly worn.

Decimort 2 by D16 Group is a bit crusher and resampler built to behave like an old sampler, with filters, jitter and dithering controls. Producers often recommend it for boom bap and lo-fi drums. It’s $35 on sale. D16’s demo is not licensed for commercial use, so don’t release music made with it.

DAW Cassette and DAW LP by Klevgrand split the job in two. DAW Cassette is a cassette deck (tape type, saturation, noise and wobble). DAW LP is a vinyl player (crackle, hum, wear and belt wobble). They’re $39.99 each. Some lists call them free, but they aren’t. Klevgrand’s demos are the full plugins with occasional audio dropouts.
Klevgrand’s videos for DAW Cassette and DAW LP:
Wavesfactory Cassette models four cassette tape types (Type I to IV), each processing stage can be switched on or off, and its artifacts include random “snaps”. It needs no iLok; you get a serial number. It’s $59.
Wavesfactory’s introduction to Cassette, presented by Dan Worrall:
Super VHS by Baby Audio has the simplest controls in this list. Six effects (Static, Heat, Shape, Magic, Drift and Wash) each have one knob, so there’s very little to set up. That simplicity is also its limit. It’s $69, and Baby Audio offers a trial.

🏷️ Or wait for RC-20 to go on sale
RC-20 is discounted often. On music forums, producers report buying it for about $34 in 2017, at half price in 2017 and 2018, for £15–16 at Plugin Boutique in February 2022, and for $29.40 at another store in October 2026. One user noted that XLN’s sales tended to come in late February and late summer.
If RC-20 is the one you want, put it on your list for Plugin Boutique’s Black Friday deals. The current price is at Plugin Boutique.
❓ Frequently asked questions
Is there a free version of RC-20?
No. XLN Audio doesn’t offer a free version, but you can try it before buying. For a free alternative, combine Chow Tape Model and TAL-Bitcrusher, or use Unison Zen Master for a one-window option.
What is the best free RC-20 alternative?
No single free plugin does everything RC-20 does. Chow Tape Model covers tape wobble and wear, TAL-Bitcrusher covers digital grit, and Unison Zen Master is the closest to RC-20’s all-in-one layout.
What is the cheapest paid alternative to RC-20?
SketchCassette II, at $24 on sale, is the cheapest in this list, and it covers RC-20’s tape side, including dropouts.
Do these work on Apple Silicon Macs?
The makers say Chow Tape Model, TAL-Bitcrusher, Airwindows, Decimort 2, DAW Cassette, DAW LP, Wavesfactory Cassette and SketchCassette II all run on Apple Silicon. Check the maker’s page for your exact macOS version before buying.
Does RC-20 use a lot of CPU?
Forum users describe it as light on CPU. As with any lo-fi chain, stacking several tape and saturation plugins on many tracks adds up.
