EL8 Distressor at a Glance

The Empirical Labs EL8 Distressor Compressor by Universal Audio recreates the Distressor, the modern studio compressor heard on thousands of hit records. Universal Audio describes it as the only end-to-end emulation of the hardware, and it runs on any Mac or PC with no UA hardware needed.

The Distressor picks up where the classic 1176 and LA-2A leave off. It can be a plain, practical compressor or a very colourful one. The ratios run from 1:1 to 20:1, plus a setting called Nuke. At 1:1 it doesn’t compress at all and just adds harmonics, which can warm up synths or strings. Nuke goes the other way, for explosive room mics or an entire mix.

Two distortion modes, Dist 2 and Dist 3, add harmonics on top of the compression, from light thickening to a burnished tape sound to full saturation. The sidechain filter stops low frequencies from making a drum bus pump, and Band Emphasis tames harsh vocals and peaks in the midrange.

Compression
