Riffer 4 at a Glance

Riffer 4 by Audiomodern is a MIDI sequencer that writes riffs for you: melodies, hooks, basslines and arpeggios in whatever key and scale you choose. Riffer has been around for over a decade, and Audiomodern says more than 100,000 producers have used it. Version 4 is a ground-up rebuild.

You pick a key and scale, press generate, and get a riff. Then you shape it. Change the note range, the density, the timing and the feel, or edit single notes by hand. When it sounds right, drag the MIDI into your DAW and play it through any instrument you like.

The biggest change in version 4 is the engine. Instead of one random generator there are five, each with its own musical character. Between them they cover hypnotic sequences, hooks, guitar-style patterns, animated arpeggios and basslines with some weight to them.

Riffer works well on top of a chord tool. If you already build progressions in Scaler 3 or Chord Prism 2, it gives you the moving part that sits over the chords. See our guide to the best chord and melody plugins for how those fit together.
