Product Summary

There’s a reason so many professional engineers still reach for large-format analog consoles, even in an era dominated by digital audio workstations. Those desks have a sound — a depth, an imaging quality, a way of making instruments sit together — that has historically been very difficult to replicate in software. Slate Digital’s Virtual Console Collection is built specifically to close that gap.

The concept is straightforward but the execution is deep: VCC lets your DAW mixer take on the sonic personality of a real analog mixing desk. It improves the imaging and depth of a mix, helps instruments occupy their own space in the frequency spectrum, and makes the overall mixing process feel more natural and musical. According to Slate Digital, you can even push your DAW faders upward to find each console’s individual “sweet spot” — something that simply isn’t possible with a standard digital mixer.

What makes VCC technically interesting is how it approaches the problem of console emulation. Slate Digital recognised that an analog desk behaves very differently depending on whether you’re talking about an individual channel or the summing bus — and the number of channels in use matters to the overall sound as well. To capture all of that complexity accurately, the collection ships as two separate plug-ins that work together: Virtual Channel and Virtual Mixbuss.

Virtual Channel is placed on each individual track in your session. Virtual Mixbuss sits on the first insert of your master fader. Together, they model both the per-channel behaviour and the summing bus interaction of the original hardware, which is a more complete and accurate approach than a single-plugin solution would allow.

Both plug-ins give you access to six classic inline recording console emulations, covering the most sought-after large-format desk models from Britain and the United States. Slate Digital states these emulations are sonically indistinguishable from the original desks they model.

Managing the collection across a large session is handled through a control group system that supports up to eight separate groups. You can assign multiple channels to any group and adjust them all at once, which makes it fast to audition different console models across multiple tracks simultaneously — and equally fast to bypass all group members for A/B comparisons. The result, as described on the product page, is mixes that feel more cohesive, balanced, and musical with less effort required.

Key Features

Processing

  • Six legendary analog console emulations — faithfully models both channel-level behaviour and summing bus interaction for a complete and accurate desk character
  • Analog-style depth, imaging, and harmonic character — improves how instruments sit in the frequency spectrum and adds the sense of space and cohesion associated with large-format hardware
  • Push the DAW faders to find the sweet spot — each console emulation responds differently as levels are pushed, just like the original hardware

Control

  • Two dedicated plug-ins working in tandem — Virtual Channel on individual tracks, Virtual Mixbuss on the master fader, each targeting the correct stage of the signal path
  • Up to eight control groups — assign multiple channels to a group for global adjustments and fast console model auditioning across your entire session
  • Quick A/B bypass — bypass all members of any group simultaneously to compare the processed and unprocessed sound

Workflow

  • Faster, more musical mixing — the analog console character helps mixes come together more naturally and requires less corrective work
  • Authorisation via a free iLok license manager account — no physical iLok hardware dongle required
