Product Summary
SSL has been shaping the sound of professional studios for decades — from massive analogue consoles to the digital tools that run in today’s DAWs. X-DynEQ is their most ambitious EQ plug-in to date, building directly on the foundation of the well-regarded X-EQ 2 and adding full dynamic equalization capabilities on top of it.
At its core, X-DynEQ is a parametric EQ that can boost or cut frequencies based on changes in the incoming signal’s amplitude. That’s the dynamic EQ side of things — and it’s a genuinely useful tool for situations where a static EQ would either do too much or too little. When you’re not using dynamic mode, it operates as a fully featured parametric EQ with precision, control, and what SSL describes as “stunning sound quality.”
The headline number is 24 bands of dynamic EQ processing, drawing from 20 different EQ types and filter shapes. That’s a significant toolkit. Each band supports both upward and downward compression and expansion, which means you’re not just taming problem frequencies — you can also bring quieter elements forward dynamically. Three filter types are new additions not found in X-EQ 2: Notch, Bandpass, and Tilt EQ, each serving a distinct purpose from surgical fixes to broad tonal balancing.
One of the more practical features is the Auto Attack, Release, and Threshold system. SSL pulls from the same program-dependent time-constant expertise found in their legendary Bus and Channel Strip compressors, letting X-DynEQ intelligently adapt its dynamic response to the incoming signal. That reduces manual tweaking significantly, especially on complex material.
The sidechain implementation is notably flexible. You can route an internal or external sidechain signal from any other EQ band, enabling both creative dynamic effects and highly targeted corrective work.
The interface is node-based, carried over and substantially enhanced from X-EQ 2. Double-clicking creates a node, and keyboard plus mouse wheel shortcuts handle parameter adjustments. Each node can access any of the 20 filter types and supports per-band processing for stereo, left, right, mid, or side signals independently. A Focus mode lets you concentrate on specific components of the stereo field — for example, just the mid or side information — which is especially useful during mastering.
There’s also a piano roll view that aligns EQ filter cutoffs and centre frequencies with musical tones, a practical touch for producers who think in pitch rather than Hz. SSL’s anti-cramping EQ technology and optional HQ mode with dynamic oversampling round out the technical picture, delivering high-accuracy frequency response across the board.
If you’re moving from X-EQ 2, preset backwards compatibility means your previous work translates seamlessly into X-DynEQ. Built-in help functionality is also included, reducing the time spent digging through documentation.
